The Ship of Theseus is a thought experiment about identity and questions the point at which one things become another. In the ship example, after several centuries of maintenance, if each individual part of the Ship of Theseus was replaced one at a time, is it still the same ship? At what point does it become another ship?

#Species and #Speciation can be thought of in a very similar way, at what point does a species become a species? Why do we separate things into species? Is this useful?

@evodevo_papers This #cichlid #speciation paper is cool. I'd love to see a video version demonstrating differences in the three species' development, in three side by side boxes. One suspects the questions asked will ultimately need to be broken into two stages: (a) "initial" morphological changes that support reproductive isolation of a subspecies, and (b) subsequent morphological changes.

I have a draft of a provocative single author paper that I’ve been sitting on for >2 years. It discusses what I see as a common pattern of circular reasoning in #speciation #genetics. I sent a few drafts to colleagues using a cartoon example, and the feedback is that I need to point out examples in the literature via citation.
