In #Siberia, #fires burned 21 million acres in 2021—4x more than usual. Some forests are now grasslands.
In 2 years, up to 19% of all California sequoias—some alive since the reign of Julius Caesar—died in fires.

#OTD Andre #Michaux made his way into #SouthCarolina by crossing the #Tugalo River.
He wrote in his #Journal:
"I recognized the #YellowRoot, #MountainLaurel, #Hydrangea, & #Hemlock #Spruce...."
It was the first time Andre saw Yellow Root (Rhododendron minus), also called the #Piedmont rhododendron, which is native to #Tennessee, #NorthCarolina, South Carolina, #Georgia, & #Alabama.

59 followers · 137 posts · Server zirk.usI like the simplicity of the "#Spruce was never sacred" take though :) Spruce is indeed a rather uninspiring tree, if you think of it ;) At least compared to #linden or #oak, spruces and fur-trees are quite boring. Pine-trees may be fun, when old and lonely, but spruces are like seagulls or pigeons of the tree world. Symmetric, boring, dispensable.
