The Chinese Visitor (1965), James Eastwood’s first Anna Zordan spy novel. It belongs to the sexy lady spy sub-genre. Anna is an expert seductress which is useful although she can certainly handle herself in other situations. Good fun.

Kenneth Royce’s 1970 spy novel The XYY Man is about a cat burglar recruited as a spy but with an interesting psychiatric twist. He can't help being a thief. Gritty, action-packed with a serious edge and highly entertaining. Highly recommended.

A.S. Fleischman's 1953 spy thriller Danger in Paradise. An American in Bali is handed a package by a girl. She is killed, except that that's not possible.

Excitement, intrigue, dangerous sexy women, romance and a very solid plot. Great stuff.

Spy thrillers always keep you on the edge of your seat because you can never trust any of the characters. Even the nice characters could be masters of espionage trying to manipulate the situation.

Ice Station Zebra (1968), one of my favourite Alistair MacLean adaptations. More a low-key espionage drama than an action movie but there's suspense and danger on the ice and under it.

Patrick McGoohan makes a fine spy hero. He gets good support from Rock Hudson and Ernest Borgnine.

Tong in Cheek (1973), 2nd of Gardner Francis Fox’s Cherry Delight sexy spy thrillers written under the name Glen Chase.

Cherry is a secret agent working for N.Y.M.P.H.O., a shadowy top-secret US government agency.

This time she is up against an alliance between the Mafia and Chinese tongs.

If spy sleaze is your thing you’ll enjoy it.

Assignment Helene (1959), an excellent Sam Durell spy novel written by Edward S. Aarons.

Durell ends up in the jungle on the track of gun-runners with two beautiful women, both decidedly untrustworthy, an equally untrustworthy US diplomat and a broken-down American ex-CIA agent.

There's a good mystery here, and there's action.

The Towers of Silence (1966), the second Peter Ward spy novel by E. Howard Hunt (of Watergate fame).

Peter Ward is investigating the death of a CIA agent in India.

Ward is a realistic kind of spy who relies on tradecraft rather than instinct. He's a hard-headed professional, ruthless, unromantic.

A good spy thriller.

Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), superior in every way to his ill-advised 1956 remake.

This is a tense hard-hitting spy thriller and one of the first movies to deal with terrorism. One of Hitchcock's most violent movies.

Great performances by all cast members with Peter Lorre the standout.

Prepping for a spy film project, an indie spy thriller, inspired by thrillers of the past. Will be casting and looking for crew to join it. No to low budget, but hoping to be joined by others looking to build an interesting and different piece of cinema; a love letter to the bleak and lonely role of spycraft.

Love this shot. Doing a Bit of a James Bond thing, making an entrance in a tuxedo!

Finally got around to watching season 1 of Slow Horses. I liked it very much. I have always been a big Gary Oldman fan and his portrayal of Jackson Lamb is amazing!

Day of the Guns, first of Mickey Spillane’s four Tiger Mann espionage thrillers written 1964-1966.

Not surprisingly the formula is not all that different from Spillane’s Mike Hammer novels. There’s plenty of sex and violence. Tiger Mann resembles Mike Hammer in that he gets personally involved in a case and the case quickly becomes a kind of one-man crusade.

Great fun.

The first two seasons of Special Branch, made in 1969 and 1970, stand as some of the finest TV espionage drama ever made.

Shot in the style of British TV at that time, in black-and-white on video and mostly in the studio, the series relied on superb writing and an atmosphere of moral ambiguity and paranoia. Brilliant television.
