From yesterday's visit to Swinside Neolithic Stone Circle, Black Combe, Lake District - with some rare sunshine!

55 stones of porphyritic slate, tallest about 3m, diameter c.27m with the entrance apparently aligning with the midwinter sunrise.

Its alternative name -'Sunkenkirk' - derives from a legend that every time local people tried to build a church from the stones, the Devil would pull it down.

Part of the remains of the neolithic embankment on Roughtor, SW England. Approx 5000 years old.

For #StandingStoneSunday a #Watercolour #sketch from way back in 2017 of the possible stone row on Mount Corin in #WestCork #Ireland. It is not clear if these are prehistoric, natural or perhaps part of an old stone boundary wall.

Long Meg & Her Daughters, Cumbria.
This massive stone circle includes 69 stones which enclose an area c.100m wide. A short distance beyond the entrance is Long Meg, a 3.4m tall monolith, aligned from the centre of the circle on the mid-winter sunset.
