Today, voting rights are under attack nationally as Republican state legislators introduce and pass laws to put up barriers to participation in our elections.

We see it in the news every day. However, Americans are coming together to fight back.

Sign up for a May 8 day of action to demand the passage of the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, D.C. Statehood, and to address one of the greatest obstacles to the passage of civil and voting rights – the filibuster.

Find an event near you or sign up for the virtual event. :CTA:

For people going on about what the Founders wanted:

The Founders weren't too big on taxation without representation. DC has a larger population than several states in this country. Those people are as deserved of representation in Congress as anyone else and they shouldn't have to move or be shoved into another state (which the people in those states don't want, either) to receive it.

Residents of the DC area have no representation in the House or Senate. No one the can call to make their voices heard on issues important to them. The rest of us need to call our Senators and tell them to pass and give them the representation they deserve. This is our chance to use our voices for those who can't.

Statehood supporters will target the Senate, where opposition is strong but leaders have promised a hearing.

DC should've been granted statehood a long time ago. The people pay taxes and deserve representation specific to their needs. I am calling now.

Exactly this. Move across Western Avenue, Eastern Avenue, Southern Avenue, or the Potomac River, and you get representation in Congress — because you now live in a place with Toyota dealers and landfills? No other country treats citizens of its capital as inconvenient residents of someplace it colonized.

@TonyStark @LiveByReason Those aren't the only reasons that neither Maryland nor DC are interested in that marriage, but I only had 1000 characters. There are different laws and tax implications between the two. When I worked and one and lived in the other -- and I've done a bunch of different combinations -- it would have been easier! Also the years I moved from one to another. Taxes, the nightmare that is the MVA when you move into Maryland and need new tags...but that's not reason enough.

@TonyStark This is an equality issue, too. There are many people of color living in DC and disenfranchisement of their voice and vote must end. :DC:

Washington D.C. residents have lived far too long without full representation.

D.C. residents pay more in federal taxes per capita than anywhere else in the country – classic “taxation without representation.” D.C. also has more residents than Vermont or Wyoming – and is similar in population to Alaska and Delaware.

Republicans have been insistent on blocking statehood for D.C., worried about their political fortunes instead of voting rights. There's no excuse for the mass disenfranchisement of people who live in Washington D.C.

Senate Majority Leader Schumer is for D.C. statehood, as is President Biden.

Go to statehood.dc.gov/page/why-stat and use their “Take Action” form, which populates a message about this to your representatives. Let's get this done.
