There seems to be a lot of public health information at the moment in the UK for Strep-A, a good thing but shows a fundamental failure to understand risk. The biggest danger to children, every day of the year, is cars.

There's a reason the massively successful campaign in the Netherlands was called #StopDeKindermoord.

“16 children are killed or seriously injured in road crashes every week on their way to or from school.” Shocking, though not surprising, stat from this well-written article. EVERY WEEK! They’re just trying to get safely to an education, a basic right. #StopDeKindermoord

In 2011 I happened across the story of the 1970s "Stop de Kindermoord" protests in the Netherlands. It was forgotten history. No-one had covered this subject in the English language in decades and it was rarely mentioned in Dutch.
Protests about the lack of safety for children on the streets became a highly effective movement which fed into the safe cycling infrastructure which we have today. Nowadays, most Dutch children cycle independently in relative safety, to school as well as to visit friends etc.
I'm happy to see that this subject has been picked up by many other people in the last ten years, though sadly it still hasn't been translated successfully into other countries' policies.

@footsteps It is very hard to collect information about anything other than KSI (Killed + Seriously Injured) in transpo agency & public health reports. Whole #VisionZero conferences have convened on this topic. I hope others jump in @ data collection, especially with good non-US examples.

What I am feeling is the anxiety Dutch felt as they launched #StopDeKindermoord movement.

Yes, we need more data. We also need people to wake up, rise up & reclaim their public space.
