The downside of the “start one’s own #Substack is that even some of the better writing is overlong (“like your thread!” someone shouts, and a bead of sweat reveals itself on my brow) and might have benefited from more reporting before hitting the publish button.

Catching a wave in the 24-hour digital news cycle does not serve quality, and supreme confidence plus an ardent online following insulates us from valuable criticism.

One remedy: a good editor.
