#SundayFishSketch is an African lungfish- adapted to living in temporary pools that dry out. I had one when I was a grad student at Bangor Uni (I kept it in the coffee room), and at the time of the sketch it still showed the remains of the larval external gills.
Did you know Splash tetra reproduce outside of the water?
Males and females jump together onto the underside of a leaf where they mate and adhere fertilised eggs. The male splashes water up onto the eggs until they hatch & fall back into the water!

Migrating some of my favourite #OrnamentalFish submissions from previous #SundayFishSketch over from Twitter.
Fast fact: Blue Lyretail live for less than a year, dying as their waterhole dries out. The future of their population depends on eggs buried in the mud that hatch as floodwaters inundate the waterhole again!

Another old #SundayFishSketch of an #OrnamentalFish from Twitter.
Fast fact: Croaking gourami produce a croaking sound using their pectoral fins, not their mouths.

Some of my more recent #OrnamentalFish illustrations for #SundayFishSketch from over on Twitter.
Fast fact: Sumatra barb are mid water swimmers in aquariums, so they're a great addition to community tanks with surface level and floor level inhabitants!

will post some old #SundayFishSketch ... or maybe I should find the best server first.
still figuring things out.
I think I landed on a gaming server (of course I chose a server that had "nerds" in the title XD )
Hey guys,
just trying out mastodon.

#SundayFishSketch is a thing on 'the bird'. This is a fish I kept & sketched in the late 70s-early 80s. Got the female as a tiny 'oddball' and she grew to be about 20cm long. Found the male on sale many years later (but never bred them). Haven't seen any since. Beautiful, graceful & peaceful. Now appear to be called Systomus rubripinnis. I may even have a print photo somewhere?
Hi fishy friends! I've migrated over to Mastadon as a backup for if Twitter implodes, so let me re-introduce myself!
I'm a final year #PhD candidate in the Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University, where I'm interested in the trade and release of #invasive #FreshwaterFish particularly ornamental species.
I love making fish art and hope that #SundayFishSketch pops up over here too!

#sundayfishsketch If anyone wonders why I seem to be a bit weird about fishes sometimes, here's a poster showing some of the illustrations I've done. This is actinopts alone.

My “ugly” #SundayFishSketch is a recreated version of an art project I did in middle school, even down to using the same fish! Paint a background, paint a fish on another page, cut and paste!
