Mongo Santamaria
Watermelon Man! (Battle, 1963)

Afro-Cuban masterpiece featuring the monster hit title track composed by Herbie Hancock. Mongo died 20 years ago but Herbie celebrated his 83rd birthday this week.

Gary Burton / Chick Corea
Crystal Silence (ECM, 1973)

I'm a huge Gary Burton fan - Corea not so much. But when the two of them locked in together they recorded some of the greatest jazz on the 70s.

Gerry Mulligan
What Is There To Say (Columbia, 1959)

With Chet Baker gone and the outstanding Art Farmer on trumpet, this super cool West Coast group recorded the last of Mulligan's no-piano quartet albums. Quite possibly the best of the lot.

Roland Kirk
The Inflated Tear (Atlantic, 1968)

Maybe the most underappreciated visionary in the history of Jazz - not only for playing multiple instruments simultaneously, but as a composer & band leader.
Dude was a legit genius. 👑

Coleman Hawkins
Hollywood Stampede
(Capitol, re-ish 1972 - originally released 1963)

Hawkins' quintet booked 2 sessions at Capitol studios in Hollywood (pre-Capitol tower) on 2/23/45 & 4/2/45. Capitol sat on the recordings for 18 years - maybe they though Hawk was too old school? Maybe because Hawk had a hit with O Pato in 62 they figured to cash in in 63? Whatever, this album is AMAZING! The Hawk is king.

Anita O'Day Sings the Winners
(Verve, 1958)

I wish I had more info on the players here because it swings like crazy. And with Anita's amazing voice and phrasing...killer.

Cannonball Adderley Sextet
Planet Earth (Riverside, 1969)

A great of energetic bop/post-bop featuring primarily Lateef compositions. Lateef's oboe solos always add a smokey exotic mystery.
