To satisfy my curiosity about Palo Alto I calculated the effective tax %.

I am surprised. #SantaClara and #Sunnyvale have the lowest effective tax rates, whereas #SanJose is the highest

The calculation is using all taxes, including special assessments and parcel taxes, and dividing by the assessed value. Random outliers with high tax are because the assessed value is very low (eg. empty lots held since the 70s) but parcel taxes are a flat rate.

Prop 13 keeps the assessed values from being realistic. Anyone have a dataset with realistic land valuations?

I’m shedding a tear for the closure of #SummitSchools Denali Middle School in #Sunnyvale. This was a charter school that offered an innovative and personalized education style, and was an inclusive and welcoming environment for kids with neurodivergent minds, while still remaining within the #SantaClaraCounty public school system. The COVID lockdowns really took a toll on them as many families moved out of the area to take advantage of #RemoteWork and more affordable housing elsewhere. The school lost too many students last year and never recovered, so they had to shut down. The converted office building they were in is now vacant once more. #sfba

On days I work from home I drive to #PhilzCoffee on Middlefield Rd in #PaloAlto for afternoon coffee.

Friday their app told me that location was closed. I figured they were having staffing problems or an employee event or something so I went to #Sunnyvale instead.

Today we drove to the same strip mall to have lunch at #BillsCafe and the whole mall was fenced off.

Turns out the building had a major fire on Thursday night!
