"but keeps the Internet free!!"

well, no. let's do the math: advertising _total_ in the USA is about $1100/person.

even if _half_ of that is due to surveillance (Johnson et al.) and _half_ of the ad money makes it to ad-supported content--which is some pretty generous assumptions--that's like $275/year from surveillance which means at _best_ $23/mo of your total "Internet" costs.

If the annoyance+resources+risks of surveillance ads are more than $23, it's a net loss

Q: how will small businesses get by after ?

A: same way they get by after Green Stamps, door-to-door sales, and the Yellow Pages

I’ve become convinced that one of the most important things we can do to protect what remains of our democracy is to protect data privacy and eliminate hyper-targeted ad tech. The goal here shouldn’t be stopping the FBI from buying the data, but stopping that data from being available to anyone at all.

@ifixcoinops They shut down in 2018, which was bleak times -- had just gone into effect, we didn't have any US state privacy laws, the tracking protection tech was niche, all the stuff was still on the way up.

But now the ad business is finally reforming, could be the right time for a re-launch

the most lucrative job of the 2020s is going to be real estate broker in whatever state passes a law with private right of action—the lawyers are going to do really well from it. Let's see, which states have a powerful Bar Association and real estate business, but relatively few and employers?

Newsletter question from krehbielgroup.com -- "What if programmatic advertising died?"

krehbielgroup.com/letter-archi

(Right now, it doesn't look like is going to die out everywhere at the same pace. Right now, some niche markets are already full of nerds. Figuring out how to serve those markets will help orgs become more future-proof, kind of like how Amazon dot com got started with figuring out how to serve early adopters of online shopping)

@LukaszOlejnik yes, Google started promoting it in 2019, before went into effect, when a lot of lawyers had an optimistic view of how the state would define "sale"

After the Sephora case it's pretty clear that a lot of "Privacy Sandbox" is sales of personal info for CCPA/ purposes. Agree there will be a lot of complexity in integrating with IAB GPP and related consent/opt-out systems

Good reminder that deceptive UX is not just a b2c thing. Web developers who include a "Facebook pixel" (which is a fairly complicated piece of by now) are seeing that the defaults are to gather a lot of info from the page, automatically -- which means embarrassing news.

Worth checking and removing or minimizing imho

(this is not really a US politics post—it's a post like most of the other stuff I post on here)

One of the easiest surveillance ad business models is the "petition" or "survey" with an upsell to political contribution. If you're in the USA and not already Internet famous for something else, you could be making mad cash with this (as a bonus, the $ doesn't go to a real politician, it's like a negative contribution)

@RLetot @aral If you ignore all the MS corruption & anti-consumer actions by MS & fixate just on privacy, MS was widely thought to not be in the biz (certainly not to the Google/FB extreme). People assumed MS did not snoop in their email. But this year MS bought a surveillance ad spin-off (?) from AT&T, so now there can be no mistake: MS is firmly in that business.
