We got a really good deal on the sweatshirts, but this still cost us $1000. We still have some funds left, but it would be awesome if some folks in our community had some money to spare to help us recoup. While sweatshirts will be a huge help to people, the winter months are the most draining on our budget. We do what we do on ~$400/month. This Thursday, a group of our volunteers brought sandwiches, snacks (including bagged chips and some fruits), water bottles, pest control supplies, trash bags, and some means to buy fuel for the residents of the encampment we serve. We were able to meet some new faces, introduce ourselves, and talk to them about their needs and wants. As we approach the fall and winter months, we know that the nights are going to start getting colder and that we’ll be shifting our priorities accordingly. We hope that, with help from our volunteers and donors, we can effectively prepare to support our neighbors going forward.

On Thursday, we brought three-bean salads, snacks and treats, batteries, soap, toothbrushes, water flavors, water bottles (not pictures), and storage containers to our encampment distro.

We wanted to make sure this week that we connected with each of the residents to ask about their needs, which will direct us in the future as to what we need to source and look into. We are always looking forward to the next distro so we can more completely meet the needs of the people we serve as well as keep new volunteers informed and involved in the nuances of the work that we do. Yesterday morning we provided folks in the downtown area with the services we provide. This time around we went out with ~70 sandwiches, water, Gatorade, capri sun, cereal bars, and some clementines. We also provided folks with tissues, body wipes, socks, mouth wash, and deodorant. For the first time ever, someone who saw what we were doing donated $35 to keep up the good work. Yesterday we did our weekly distribution to an encampment. We saw a lot of new faces yesterday and a few faces we haven’t seen in a long time! We brought the residents a ton of food including two big batches of chicken made by someone who reach out, some individually portioned out food, water, deodorant, toothpaste, batteries, a couple canopies, as well as some footwear.

The rotation of residents makes our job a little harder, but we will get through it and make sure the people are served.

We had yet another successful mobile distro earlier today. We handed out 32 sandwiches (tuna and PB&J), 2 cases of water, roughly 60 pairs of socks, deodorant, hand wipes, and almost an entire box of nail clippers. We could have used more sandwiches. Folks have said some other services that walk around haven’t been coming around for a couple weeks now, so many people were happy we came.

Yesterday we had yet another excellent redistribution of food and water. We also brought much needed ice and batteries. We were very lucky to have two new people make beef and bean chilli with bread, sandwiches, fruit, and chips!

Aiding in the survival of the unhoused is not simply rewarding, it's also an active choice to come into community with people who share the understanding of what makes this work necessary.

We haven’t been keeping up with social media. We apologize! We’ve had lots of rainy days and who wants to take their phone out to document in that weather? Clearly not us! We are expecting in the next week to be assisting encampment residents with recovering from the recent sweep activity that stole and destroyed many of their belongings. On Sunday, we brought with us pasta salad, bagged snacks, water bottles, bags of ice, batteries, socks, and hygiene supplies to distribute. We’ve been checking in on displaced residents every day while the sweep is underway. Our presence seems to have made a positive impact on their mental health in comparison to previous sweeps where we had a smaller volunteer base, resulting in less visits. Sweeps are underway. We were able to bicker with the pigs and buy some more time for residents to move. We were able to help residents move some of their belongings. This Sunday, in anticipation of an imminent sweep, we wanted to bring as much food and supplies to encampment residents as possible so that they could concentrate on preparing themselves. We brought wraps and three bean salad, a ton of muffins and pastries, hygiene products, harm reduction supplies, water, water flavoring, and some bags of ice.

We now know that a dumpster full of their things has been taken already today and that the sweep will continue tomorrow. We are raising funds to help them rebuild after this act of state violence and accepting donations of tarps and clothes, which are most urgently needed. Last week, residents of one of the encampments we support were told they will be forcibly removed. We have been through this before, so we know what to prepare for. To get ahead of the game, we are trying to raise extra funds via our Ko-Fi to help these residents rebuild. We will need donations of tarps and clothes as well as a bail fund in case of any arrests. The bourgeois state treats the unhoused as a nuisance. Rather than meeting the residents in order to assess what is needed to raise their standards of living to something considered humanly acceptable, instead of providing medical care, or investing in better housing that gives folks privacy, and creating safe consumption sites, or any of the numerous things that actually make sense, state representatives increase the funding of the police, throwing people in jail, with a vile disregard for human life.

Warm Up hasn’t done a mobile distro since the early days. We decided we had enough volunteers to start covering more ground and finally living more up to our name. We handed out turkey and Swiss sandwiches, water, cookies, and harm reduction supplies to folks in the Downtown Crossing area. We learned that our sandwiches were better than the bologna ones that they get from other groups and got to meet a quite a few folks in that area. We’re looking forward to expanding our work to other areas of the city. Expanding our work also means, we need donations coming in. Hey hey freedom fighters, jail breakers, justice seekers of most variety, yesterday we had some people in the community show up for our unhoused friends. One in particular made this super colorful and tasty dish, I wish I had some lol. Though we did not photograph it, we also brought water, snack packs, bakery treats and fruit. It is from a place of humble service to the people we share this city with that we begin to imagine our destinies beyond and without the forces that push people to sleep outside.

Today we shared an abundance of water, as well as some fresh sourdough bread, pastries, snacks, lemons, burritos, tarps, propane and batteries. We had some nice chats with residents and got some great feedback on an upcoming project we’d like to offer. This past Sunday, we brought two discrete baked pasta dishes (!), bakery treats and breads, a ton of hygiene supplies, propane, and as much water as we could feasibly carry to encampment residents. One of the residents requested lemons for flavoring water, so we brought a few of those, too. With the hot weather last week and summer fast approaching, encampment residents needed a lot of water, and we hope to keep them supplied in the months to come.
