"…directly address , which is one of the root causes of perceived income . By making nonwinners’ performance available to winners in a
game where only one randomly selected person can win, we can effectively induce winners to redistribute more of their earned incomes to nonwinners who performed equally well, if not better, than them"

@drandrewv2 What an excellent point. Yes!

The example itself is perhaps part of the issue? It does beautifully illustrate but does so with an example that - as you say, once genius was applied and with the benefit of hindsight - does perhaps lead people to mistakenly *think* it is somewhat obvious and intuitive? Because of the “obvious” NON-survivors in a war. It’s too neat!
There needs to be a standard less “obvious” follow-up second example! 🤔

Many of us know the illustration of from Abraham Wald’s report on returning WW2 fighter planes, but I wonder whether people take the right lessons from the story at all.

I just saw a comment on LinkedIn saying “it should be obvious”. That misses the point. It’s not obvious at all, except with hindsight. We don’t see what we don’t see.

Wald’s was a feat of unconstrained, inquisitive thinking that’s not only an uncommon skill, but it’s often actively discouraged in real life…

Teehee, I immediately went Ctrl+F "planned obsolescence."

Localized advice from pros, experts, +fans ups granularity to sand down choices. Beyond personal recs, subject-specific forums, StackExchange, subReddits, etc., help.

Thrifting, bartering, +repair 've really changed in the last 20 years, too, as pros+ semipros've swooped in to dominate websites, social media, + apps.

I was today years old when I finally get what I wasn't getting from this image as an example for survivorship bias.

I was like: of course you are going to reinforce the engines and the tail, because if there are no bullets, the ones where the bullets are are actually on the ground.

I finally researched the topic and I got the original issue: they wanted to reinforce the parts where the bullet holes were for the planes that got back 😬
