First Impressions (which have been a long time coming) of @pelgranepress swords & sorcery RPG #SwordsoftheSerpentine, written by Kulp & Dresner.

TL;DR: Pelgrane Press have produced a great addition to the GUMSHOE line. The setting is evocative and full of inspiration; there's potential for many hours of entertainment in a well-written swords and sorcery setting. The game engine has been fine-tuned into a sharply energetic version perfect for the genre.

@Mjack I will give it a try 🙈… how do #Gumshoe rules for #SwordsoftheSerpentine manage the constituents of the swords and sorcery genre? Gumshoe is great for everything related to investigative procedures, but city-based sword flashing thievery…how is this integrated in gumshoe rules? What‘s the trick?

#RPGaDAY2023 Day 19: Favourite scenario. Pre deep-freeze, I’d have to say I6 Ravenloft. It was a blast for the players and huge fun to run. Post deep freeze? There are so many, but I have a very soft spot for Murder Most Foul for #SwordsOfTheSerpentine and @SavageSpiel‘s Mother Said I Never Should for #Liminal.

It's also a tie between @viscountjonkeer's #Liminal game at #Groglaw 2022 and @drcpunk's run of Murder Most Foul for #SwordsOfTheSerpentine at #GenConOnline 2023. The former saw a crew utterly wreck St. Pancras International station on a supposedly hush-hush mission for the government, while the latter sent an ill-assorted bunch with *way too many* secrets to hide to investigate the city's greatest detective. Glorious!

Going through Swords of the Setpentine once again. It's a wonderful book, but a few things feel redundant. And I'm not just talking of examples (generic Investigative spend effects could have been summarized just once, imho).
But also mechanically: Wealth, Reputation, Preparedness, Alliances (and other abilities too, at times) cover a lot of the same ground, and sometimes I wonder if the granularity is really worth it.
