After chatting with @matrix over email I opted for the managed hosting option using Element (https://element.io) which starts at $5 per month (I am on the $15 per month plan which means I can add 4 others if I desire).

Avoid using the https://Marrix.org domain & use a custom domain instead.

@clq This issue might be a helpful read. Note that more recent versions of #Synapse are much more efficient at joining complex #Matrix rooms like Matrix HQ. (Which IMO are rarely worth the hassle!)

@edgren #Matrix is the protocol - you would need to install a #homeserver such as #Synapse. But as others have mentioned it is a heavy piece of software to run. #Dendrite is another with a smaller footprint but not sure if anyone has tried on #RPi yet. https://matrix.org/docs/projects/server/dendrite

@tfb @JonYoder I remember reading the Perl Camel Book with actual excitement - "wow, this is so much easier than C!" And similar writing a GUI in Tcl/Tk nearly 30 years ago now. Today I wouldn't touch either of them. I moved from both of them to Python in the early 2000s, and then from Python to Haskell, OCaml, Rust, etc. after experiencing some issues with scaling Python even in the v2 era. (Now, people are, eg, rewriting #Matrix #Synapse server in non-Python languages for performance)

@huntra If you're running #Synapse it might be worth asking other homeserver admins for help troubleshooting.

3/ I am a huge fan of #Matrix/#Element and even run my own instance. It has huge promise. But it is Not. There. Yet. Some reasons:

#Synapse, the only currently viable Matrix server, is not ready. My Matrix instance hosts ONE person, me. Synapse uses many GB of RAM and 10+GB of disk space, with little tuning for either. It's caused OOMs more than once. And this is AFTER extensive tuning. It cannot be hosted on a Raspberry Pi or even one of the cheaper VPSs.
