... in the current case, the #AtmosphericRiver provides extreme warmth in parts of #Europe at the turn of the year with the advection of subtropical or even tropical air up to mid-latitudes. In terms of temperatures at the 850 hPa level, we are in the upper range of what is possible at this time of year. Since the air is well mixed due to strong winds, it could even be enough for decade records at ground level.

Why we #meteorologists talk about "warm noses" during a #FreezingRain event? That's why ;-)
In the vertical section, the warm air pushing over the cold air looks like an upturned nose. The situation tomorrow, Wednesday, over #France is a textbook example. All imaginable physical states of #precipitation will be represented in a very small area, from #Snow, to #IcePellets, to supercooled freezing rain.

#Snow extent in the Northern Hemisphere has reached a record maximum! This is mainly due to the snow-rich North Asian region.
This favors the formation of a "cold high" there, which in turn strengthens and possibly prolongs the blocking of the North Atlantic/Eurasian flow pattern.

The blocking situation over northern/northeastern #Europe continues and will even intensify in the medium term. Further wintering is to be expected over Eastern Europe. The anomaly of the 2m temperature of the mean of the IFS-EPS already ranges from -6 to -10 K on a widespread area. However, it is completely unclear how far the cold air can advance to the west, as the position of the blocking high is subject to great uncertainties.

Especially on the western edges of the Dinaric Mountains, Pindos Mountains and in the Apennines #rainfall amounts over 100 mm are likely, locally even over 300 mm. #Flooding and landslides may occur.

But there are also increasing evidences for the first snow of this #winter half year in a narrow strip over parts of Central Europe, where continental cold air meets maritime warm air. However, the latter is more uncertain.
