Near the end of the experiment, the hairy willowherb (Epilobium hirsutum, Onagraceae) is growing, blooming and fruiting like crazy. In a few days - after 1/2 year of experiment - we'll know how pesticides and flooding have affected our riparian community.

Landau, Anno Domini 2023.

All doctoral researchers study animals, hydrology and soils at the unique Riparian Stream Mesocosms (RSM) facility next to river Queich.

Really ALL of them? No. A small group also mapped plants yesterday and found some beautiful species:

🍀 broadleaf cattail, Typha latifolia, Typhaceae
🍀 European pellitory, Achillea ptarmica, Asteraceae

Was wir in der Wissenschaft wirklich so treiben, heute:

Aus Poolnudeln Käfige für Blattläuse basteln, auf Blätter montieren, Töpfe im Gewächshaus mit Pestiziden fluten.

Wozu? Einfluss und Transport von Pflanzenschutzmitteln im Lebensraum Ufer bzw. Wasser-Land-Effekte besser verstehen.

Der Star ist Aphis fabae, die Schwarze Bohnenlaus, hier auf Silene dioica, der Roten Lichtnelke, montiert.

Großes Topfexperiment im Rahmen des DFG-Graduiertenkollegs (systemlink.uni-landau.de) am Campus Kaiserslautern.

What does it take to measure effects of in a riparian habitat in a controlled system?

Natural, unpolluted riparian soil, of course. 350 kg of it, and it has to pass through the 2-mm sieve.

There are worse jobs if the sun is shining!

The invasive plant species Japanese knotweed and Himalayan balsam influence the abundance of soil arthropods and are characterized by lower richness of root-associated fungi compared to the native nettle in riparian habitats. Just published today in Biological Invasions!

Noch ist das Gewächshaus leer und die Keimlinge frisch geschlüpft, aber bald schon soll am Campus Kaiserslautern ein großes Topfexperiment aufgebaut werden, um den Einfluss der Stressoren Flutung, Pestizide und invasive Arten im Lebensraum Ufer zu erforschen.

Wir suchen zahlreiche Hiwis und bieten mehrere Abschlussarbeiten ab sofort an! Beteiligt sind die Arbeitsgruppen Molekulare Botanik (KL) und Ökosystemanalyse (LD).

In a big two-year bottom-up mesocosm experiment, the impact of the fungicide copper was evaluated on the riparian plants common nettle and invasive Japanese knotweed within the DFG graduate school SystemLink. The next results have been published:

In a just started project within the Research Training Group at University Koblenz- we study how bottom-up and top-down trophic cascades in native riparian communities including bacteria, fungi, plants, herbivores and their predators are affected by , soil contamination and invasive plants ⤵️
