Support is urgently requested to help keep Kew Herbarium at Kew.

The Director and Trustees intend to move the over an hour away from its current location at the heart of Kew.

Separating the herbarium from the gardens, library, and laboratories will cripple the ongoing taxonomic work at a time when we are facing a dire biodiversity crisis.

Introducing 2 new species, Melanascoma panespora and Pleurothecium brunius, a new genus, Melanascoma, and the new family Melanascomaceae. This is the first in a series of 5 papers (hopefully) this year on freshwater fungi in Australia. ingentaconnect.com/.../content

I learned a LOT of , , , and through following certain subreddits. They were my safe anti-anxiety practice during the pandemic when so much was unknown. Pouring myself into learning about plant families, morphology syntax, and digging into dichotomous keys kept me level. My use case is fringe, but there are so many support communities on the verge of collapse due to silicon valley bro greed.

Solidarity with everyone participating in the protest!

Taxonomists: I just asked ChatGPT to write a systematic description of the trilobite Flexicalymene meeki. It failed.
We're safe, for now . . .

In November, Ralf Werneburg and Jörg Schneider published a new genus and species of notostracan-like crustacean from the late Carboniferous of Germany: Thuringiops nephroides. They rightfully assessed that it probably belongs somewhere on the stem to the kazacharthran lineage (the monophyly of that is another issue entirely).

The monophyly of Kazacharthra is far from satisfactorily demonstrated, in my opinion. Really, the only feature that sort of holds them together is the long telson (not anal plate), but this is not preserved in most fossils.

They are meiofaunal. They don't assault us relentlessly with their presence. We have to specifically look fro them (sifting through lots of mud in the process). As a result, we only know of about 12 species in 5 genera. There are likely oodles more out there. There is a lot we don't know about them--probably more than we DO know about them.

Late Paleozoic clam shrimp, in general, tend to be rather poorly preserved--limiting the number of useful characters we can retrieve.

One of the most entertaining and/or frustrating steps when doing phylogenetic analyzes is selecting the outgroup (or outgroups) and decide if a character is plesiomorphic or apomorphic. And if you have multi-estate characters, oh boy... 😫 🤣 .
