#RSEng Christian Lück at #teimec2023 actually IMPLEMENTING #XPointer for #TEI#XML, rescuing these dead unicorns once specified by the #W3C and putting them to use for the #DigitalHumanities community

Nick Thieberger at #teimec2023 dissecting more than a dozen #RSEng tools designed for #TEI, suggested to his team to enhance their #digitalEdition. They all failed at some point during setup, preventing them from being used in their environment. It remained unclear to the team whether any software had advantages over static HTML sites, besides introducing additional #dependencies.

It still needs some work, but I'm delighted to announce that the beta of TEI-IIIF, a #Python package that transforms #TEI transcriptions into #IIIF annotation manifests is now available for download from #GitHub / #PyPi!

@mia @zoeleblanc @jerielizabeth As one with a pretty active GitHub presence, I’m working there a lot with my students and on projects—it’s part of my daily and monthly work with classes and the #TEI. I also am not super concerned about my citation indices at this fairly secure stage in my career—but I do publish work connected to the projects I code on. I code bc I enjoy it, and know it’s good for my students so it’s built into my pedagogy.

So I expect we’ve all got a #JohnMastodon story here, don’t we? Here’s mine:
Many years ago, when he was just tinkering with the Fediverse, John reached out to me to ask about how I thought he should handle text markup. “Put it in #TEI,” I said, true to my roots, “then it’ll be easy for any instance to archive their posts in a way that’s useful for future research.” I don’t think he followed up on my suggestion, but it was nice that he asked.
