Doing some ATASCII and PETSCII BBSing on some of the upstairs retro systems last night.

The machine is back together, currently without the RF shielding. Seems to hold in place solidly without it.
I think it will need a cleanup at some point though, also some keys seem a bit repeat-y so will need cleaning too.
Fully working otherwise though 😎
I actually suspected this recently arrived chip was a fake, so am pleasantly surprised to see this screen 😎
Using the very broken joysticks and some shorting of keyboard pins, I got this to run just fine. Sound works, all good as far as I can see!
Taking the TI99/4A out for a spin tonight.
I've had this particular computer for almost exactly 40 years.
Progress.
Took the TI that I got from the antique store all apart and checked the ribbon cable coming off of the keyboard. It's solid and has perfect continuity.
I think that the keyboard issues are strictly mylar/carbon issues from lack of use.. I've been able to get most keys working by just repeatedly pressing them. The "Enter" key is being really stubborn though.
In every other way testable, this machine is fine.
I have extra TI99/4A parts including an extra power supply, so after a bit of cleanup, I tried to power it up. To my surprise, it powered right up and had a great picture!
It seems that the "1" key isn't currently working (and possibly some others), but I'm pretty sure that's easily fixable.
I already have all kinds of TI99/4A accessories, because I still have my original beige TI, so I'll do a lot more testing later this week.
Found a TI99/4A in a pile of junk in a particularly messy booth at an antique mall for just over $25 today. Of course I bought it.
Other than a couple of dents in the metal part of the case, it seems to be in pretty good shape. The tag said, "has not been tested", and there was no power supply or anything else with it, so I didn't expect it to work.
It appears, as I read it, that this may be the last moment to purchase an F18A FPGA VDP VGA board, a highly enhanced hardware replacement for the VDP in systems using the TMS9918A graphics chip, such as the TI-99/4A, ColecoVision, and MSX systems.
It seems the last pre-order from SHIFT838 ends on March 7 -- and that will be -it- for production of this unit by SHIFT838.
So, if you want one, now is the time. (I have one in my '99 and it's driving the 80-column ANSI display shown in my earlier toot.)

ANSI BBSing on the TI-99/4A.
Raspberry Pi 3 interfaced to the TI-99 via peripheral expansion card and F18A video hardware replacement enabling 80-column, 16-color text. Logged in via WiFi232 device connected to Myarc serial card.

Using the TI99/4A for some BBSing tonight.
TI99/4A setup nearing completion. FinalGROM, Voice module with power mod and 32k expansion. Next up TPMS RGB mod. #ti99 #RetroComputing
Here in the middle of Twixmas, fiddling about with the things I fiddle about with during a work holiday, I've given thought to some of the particularly notable Christmases of my childhood. I suppose topping that list is Christmas 1982, when I received my first home computer -- a TI-99/4A.
And that's when it all began.
While I do presently have a nice '99 setup here in the Byte Cellar, some years back I found a place that would develop ancient camera film. I had a few Kodak "disc"s in a drawer, and as a reward for the effort, I uncovered full setup photos of that system at its most expanded state.
I do wish I had taken more photos as I jumped, fickle, from platform to platform over the years...

Merry Christmas, tooters!
Here's a list of holiday demos (videos thereof) for vintage computers I've compiled for 2022. May it warm your bits and bytes!

Tonight, I will be mostly preparing to etch some home made PCB's. This is probably the last iteration, fingers crossed, of the TI99 overclock board.
