As an writer, I find the layoffs in the diversity, equity and inclusion departments very disconcerting. Many DEI execs have opened doors for me that would’ve otherwise been sealed shut. I find much of it mirrors the dismantling of writers rooms, which cuts off the pipeline for new, diverse voices.

Bonus points for my lit manager!! I just booked a general with two execs in ANIMATION. My supernatural pilot is LIVE-ACTION and dark as hell. Yet, my rep saw the potential and still submitted my sample. I LOVE his outside-the-box thinking!!

Spreadsheets are a writer’s best friend! During staffing, I can quickly search my past exec meetings at studios, prodcos and networks. It’s nice to drop an exec’s name when emailing my agent re: show needs. Any lil’ boost can help me become his staff writer submission!! Bonus points if I get a writer’s rec for the showrunner!

On the surface, my series sounds like a typical cop procedural. Yet, I set it in a never-before-seen world and my lead is Chinese-American (like me). Specificity and voice are a writer’s secret weapon. Don’t be afraid to use it. Now, I have producers attached who are known for prestige TV. It all feels quite surreal, but it’s a good reminder to trust my POV.

Had a general with an EXEC today and talked staffing for their shows. I asked if one show was a mini-room. Their response: “We don’t do mini-rooms. The head of our company feels strongly about it.” I smiled and thought to myself: I’ve found my new favorite prodco!! 🙂👍
