I'm so grateful when the cold open on a pilot episode is competent and engaging. It means I can relax in the confidence that I'm in good hands and I'm going to enjoy the episode and the series.

First scenes / first sequences have a lot of responsibilities. Earning the viewer's trust and goodwill might be the most important, at least for me.

Finally caught up on #insidenumber9 and I have been so impressed with it. There are hilarious episodes, there are scary episodes, there are incredibly affecting straight drama episodes—including one that reads as a tribute to Ken Loach and actually works one those terms—and there are episodes that contain all of these strands. It really is a masterclass in #TVwriting.

I have a draft!

Actually, given that the scriptment was 26 pages for a 58-page script, this could potentially be considered a second draft?

It definitely needs some polishing, but I'm still absolutely thrilled to pieces to have got this far.

I ❤️ this project SO MUCH and have really enjoyed the whole process of working on it. I can't wait to start getting feedback so I can launch into the next round.

If you want an advances class in writing set-ups and pay-offs, watch the pilot episode of Rita (created by Christian Torpe) until you get to "the wave", then watch it again from the start and pay attention to every beat that sets that moment up. It's absolutely delicious writing.
