Happy birthday Taras Shevchenko, Ukrainian poet and artist, born 209 years ago today.

"І на оновленій землі
Врага не буде, супостата,
А буде син, і буде мати,
І будуть люде на землі."

"And on the renewed earth
There will be no enemy, no adversary,
But a son and a mother,
And people on the earth."

Such hope that these words of his will one day soon be true.

On the anniversary of Putin's militants' invasion of Ukraine, many individuals in Russia took to the streets to pay their respects to Taras Shevchenko, a beloved Ukrainian writer and philosopher, by leaving flowers at his monuments. However, the current government in Putin's Russia sees Shevchenko as a criminal, and what happened next is truly outrageous.

In a blatant disregard for the law and the constitution, police officers arrested these activists and forced them to throw away their flowers. This kind of authoritarian behavior is unacceptable and must be called out for what it is: a violation of human rights and freedom of expression.

It's deeply concerning that in today's world, people can be punished for simply expressing their beliefs and honoring the legacy of a cultural icon. The actions of the Russian government are a clear sign that democracy and freedom are under threat, not just in Russia, but around the world.
