Yiddish באקאליינע bakaleyne "grocery store", came to #Yiddish from #Ukrainian Бакалiя (groceries), to which it came from #Tatar, to which it came from #Persian (بقالی baqqālī,), to which it came from from #Arabic بقالة biqāla (groceries, retail store) or بقال baqqāl. Quite an unusual story of loaning across at least 5 #languages and linguistic families!

Alexandrinsky Theater in Saint Petersburg announced a play based on #shakespeare #sonnets, which would performed in three languages: #russian, #tatar and #mari and based on the idea that sonnets represent correspondence between the count of Rutland and his wife.
I mean, it would be curious by itself, but in the times of gruesome war, the (de?)colonial layer of this story became even more apparent. @linguistics @translators @poetry

@incitatus I do hope you are a real #Tatar. I can teach you how to ride #cossack style and use a #saber on #horse back if not ;)
If I throw some hashtags in here, will it be easy enough to get back to the original like other sites? Or no?
Let's find out, weee!

My #Hungarian grandfather told me when I was little that much of our ancestry were gypsies (his word). Is this likely to be #Romani people in Hungary, or a different group of people? What are the possible relationships here?
My grandma was #Polish (it's possible she was the one who told me this and I remembered incorrectly).
I also have #Tatar ancestry on the Hungarian side, if that is more applicable.

2. Only #Tat is called #CrimeanTatar, while #Nogai and #Urum is shown as separate languages, and #Yalıboylu is called "Crimean Turkish". This is a bold move that I kinda like (usually they are gathered under an umbrella term of Crimean #Tatar identity), and it's unusual.
3. Similarly nicely, central #Karelian in relation to #Livvik and #Lude (although #Tver #Karela are marked as simple Karelian)
4. #Polesian is shown as a separate #language, which is cool! (It's a transitional BY-UA #dialect)
