A #correction - #Google, #Facebook et al are not "refusing to abide by our #laws". They are not in #violation of our laws.

We passed a law that says "If you #link to #Canadian #news #sites, you must #pay a link #tax".

So they have a choice: continue to link to Canadian news sites (and pay for the privilege), or stop linking to Canadian news sites. There is no #third #option.

We made them choose; don't be mad they made a choice.

It isn't a "#threat".

The #government proposed a policy requiring #Meta (and others) to pay to #link to #Canadian #news sources. Then they passed an act implementing it.

So Meta has a choice to make: they can continue to link to Canadian news sites and pay this "link #tax", or they can stop linking to Canadian news sites. There is no third option.

Canadian #politicians and #media cannot claim it is wrong for Meta to choose the second option; can't have it both ways.

So... we have a #bloated provincial #government #bureaucracy, with more than 10% of the population working for the government and its various agencies.

We have a high personal #income #tax rate, as well as corporate tax rate.

We have government-owned crown corps for electricity, gas, telecommunications, liquor distribution (and until recently, retail sales!).

We have hugely expensive public #healthcare and #education.

But we're "right wing".

Everything is relative, I guess.

@xinniw @pluralistic I filed our taxes via TurboTax and didn't see anything like that. We hit the $110K mark and have a mortgage but not a lot else. I never saw a message to check if things were correct but might have seen the "talk to a tax expert" button or whatever that I ignored. And to be very honest, you don't have to use Turbo Tax to file...you can simply get the paper form and fill it out or online for free via the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free (if your AGI is less than $73K). #FYI #tax
