Obviously, May 2023, we are living in a (globally) cost of living crisis. Markets are depressed and/or languishing for over 1 years, particular post-covid and especiall since Ukraine Invasion (Feb 2022). Inflation rates are in the UK reported 10-20% for food / groceries. Salaries have not kept up. There are recent big #TechLayoffs #Job losses in the last 9 months to date. We have a weak nearly cold economy.

These sites are particular sparse with activity, I wonder how they would perform in a "hot economy"?

@samitchdoo @pluralistic Aside from the short term profit gain from reduced salary load, it's been suggested this is a coordinated effort by tech executives to reverse the rate of compensation gains which occurred during the tight COVID era job market.

Well, 10 days into my latest job hunt, I've realized I'm done playing the salary negotiation game of chicken. I know the conventional advice is never state your own desired salary first.

Screw that. I have a range I think is reasonable. I open with a number in the middle of that range when they ask what I'm looking for. I've found that most of the time, they accept it, or even offer to bump it up a bit for me.

Does that mean I could have asked for a bit more? Probably. But if I get an amount I'm happy with, and they get an amount they're happy with, cool. It makes the start of the relationship that much better.

@lauren I would love to see some analysis of the long term profit/revenue impact of those companies which employ mass layoffs relative to peer companies that didn't.
I read for instance that #Apple has not had such an event since Jobs took it back over in the late 90's, yet they've managed to become the most valuable company in the world.
I strongly suspect that with highly profitable companies like #Google, bending to the will of activist investors for short term profit increases via mass layoffs very likely has negative consequences on long-term profit/revenue. So capitulating to these activists is a big mistake.

@mikebyrne_phd Alphabet's net income for the year ending Sep/2022 was ~$67B so clearly these RIFs have nothing to do with the company's ability to sustain staff salaries. Rather this is a combination of large shareholders demanding even higher profits from these companies, thereby boosting share value and so their stake's value, and company leadership using "market conditions" as an excuse to shed staff/projects they consider low performing.

Devastating to say the least on tech companies. Massive hiring spikes from 2017-19 at places like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, etc. now led to massive layoffs in just the last 6 months. At least 200K jobs cut since August 2022. Originally my dream to work in tech but currently in banking/finance.
