I read about an interesting #foss project. In the last paragraph, about "get involved", it says "... join our #telegram channel ...".

Frankly, my first thought is that if they accept Telegram as a communication platform, they will also accept stuff in their code that I am not going to like.

Probably I am wrong. But that's what I think whenever I stumble upon such a project.
