From one of my handwritten morning pages in November, against #Schopenhauer view of #teleology https://www.patreon.com/posts/against-on-of-79695196?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_link
Great piece by Jamelle Bouie: “As everyone in this conflict over history understands, education is as much about the creation and maintenance of a social order as it is the dissemination of skills and knowledge.”

Here's Edwin Curley, "#Spinoza: Issues and Directions" (1990) on #teleology again. Bennett's book seems to contend that Spinoza denies *all* final causes. But Curley thinks (and I agree) that he only denies them to Nature. @philosophy #philosophy

Today #Nietzsche has led me to someone I've so far managed to avoid... #Kant. But the "Critique of the Power of Judgement" (1790) looks relevant to the question of #teleology.
He refers to §65/§66, and to Goethe. @philosophy #philosophy

Still, it's good to know that #Bacon praised #Democritus for denying #teleology; if both #Democritus and #Lucretius deny it, then it seems like #Epicurus probably did too? @philosophy

So angry at #Schopenhauer rn. How can he possibly choose #Aristotle over #Spinoza on this question. His defense is that studying #biology will, for "every good and normal mind," lead to #teleology. What a non-argument. Spinoza directly addresses this position. And obviously this is *precisely* the opposite of #Darwin

I suppose another person to look into re: #teleology is #Heraclitus. If fragment 123 is better understood as "The natural companion of Physis is concealment," then this seems related to #Spinoza's insight on nature having no ends. Nature can't be understood with human reasoning, perhaps? https://perceiverations.wordpress.com/heraclitus-fragment-123/

The appendix to Part I of #Spinoza's Ethics constitutes one of the most concerted arguments against #teleology in nature that I've found before #Darwin.
The other major one I have looked at is dependent origination in #buddhism which I have written about here https://bit.ly/3glD7bD
Do you know any others in #philosophy or elsewhere?
I'm aware I need to look more into #Hume #Bacon #Lucretius and #Pyrrho and I'm currently deep in #Nietzsche

#Nietzsche on #teleology since #Kant, from 1868 essay notes, "On the Concept of the Organic since Kant." Written as he moves away from #Schopenhauer and the Young Hegelians. Don't think he ever finished the essay.
I was wondering if this was during the period of "dialectician's clarity" in Ecce Homo, but that's 1880 I think.
