Did some number crunching for my sister, who is teaching her 8th graders about #temperance today.

The height of American #alcohol consumption was in the 1830s, where the average American drank 7.1 gallons equivalent of pure ethanol per year. Each drink has ~14g of ethanol, and there are 3,785.41g in a gallon. That works out to 270.4 drinks per gallon.

That means the average American consumed 1,919.7 drinks per year - about 5.3 A DAY.

There is the danger of sinking into a sort of mindless video game of smite the vices, and forgetting what all this is in aid of. The vices and virtues are not the point. Unbearable, dazzling beauty: being overwhelmed by the infinite fractal elaboration of the worlds, visible and hidden – that is the point. I could win the game and lose the life. This is necessary, but it’s not sufficient. Remember that. #virtues #temperance
