I was very surprised to see three red-eared terrapins basking in the sun today in The Wirral!

They are a non-native species to the UK. Sightings began in the 1980s, leading to speculation that they were unwanted pets, bought following the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle craze

Although not known to breed in the wild, rising temperatures may allow them to breed and their populations to grow, posing significant threats to native birds and insects

#TurtleTuesday: At one of my regular fieldwork sites, a few Malayan Box Turtle (Cuora amboinensis) individuals have been seen soaking in Wild Boar wallows that become flooded after heavy rain. This individual was 1st seen in April 2021, and seen again monthly in Aug-Oct 2022.
