I disagree with and/or 's idea that asking where inequality comes from necessarily implies the existence of a past era of equality. Like... even if the first time one cell divided into two, the second was somehow subordinate to the first, *that would be an answer to the question*

I'm reading , delighted to hear these scholars lucidly arguing for something really important to me.

The arrogance of – which skews how we regard our ancestors, and shrinks our ability to imagine alternative futures – has frustrated me for a very long time. At last: DEBUNKED!

Graeber in particular happens to be my favorite scholarly curmudgeon at this point. So very clearheaded, so very cantankerous. Graeber.

Habe gerade angefangen, "Anfänge" () von und zu lesen und nach dem einleitenden Kapitel... Wow!

If you want to refer to an idea or argument that originates with The Dawn of Everything, do you say "Davidian"?

Finishing up reading Graeber and Wengrow's and can't help thinking this would've worked better as a reimagined Sid Meier's Civilization.

Yo , where are all the 4x games?? smh

I think next time I read On Kings and I think I'll focus on a word they don't use: defictionalization. The first Kings were pretend Kings. The first prisons (from what I can tell) appear to be pretend prisons (Tartarus?). How can we tell stories or play with fantasies without accidentally unleashing our nightmares and darker dreams on the world every once in a while?

*slow double face palm*

So while I'm generally against "read x" as a response, reading saves so much time on bad and dated narratives and info. The forms of domination that we have now are contingent on specific circumstances and decisions that folks made, not deterministic results of someone doing a trade one time.

According to and 's taxonomy of , wields sovereign power (banning users and topics) and knowledge power(tech IP, algorithms, down ranking).

, on the other hand wields sovereign (firing staff, unplugging servers) and charismatic power (although this seems to be waning quickly).

I wonder if this disjoint is part of the reason why Musk and Twitter aren't working well together?

@UncleCid @NerdShinobi @Wolven we don't need to fix all the problems. There will always be problems. We just need systems that help us mitigate the effects of worst of those problems - checks and balances on power.

I highly recommend giving The Dawn of Everything by Wengrow and Graeber a read for inspiration on how some parts of this might be achieved.

Time for a short 📖

I finished reading by D. and D. .

It's quite a long book that took me way more than a month to go through, but worth the read and the last fifth of the book, post conclusion, is notes and references that can be skipped without losing too much. Overall very interesting, I warmly recommend it, even if some chapters were going a little too deep into the archeological record for my non-specialist tastes.

It was illuminating, specially as I had previously read by J. and by Y. N. , both very popular books, and both adopting a very deterministic view of past human history.
I'm not 100% convinced by the interpretations of Graeber & Wengrow, but they appear to make a real honest effort at understanding our past, they base their reflections on recent archeological records, and present a much more nuanced "story of the human civilizations" than the previously cited books.

The book doesn't really provide any actionnable advice on how we should collectively go forward, but at least it tries to set the record straight on what was previously attempted ... with various level of success.
