Reading (still) makes me appreciate how the new - as well as tackling the climate crisis and addiction amidst the rise of an evil upheaval - has so many layers of ancient and forgotten, sophisticated cultures and knowledge that are just coming to light. Teams are researching these while others fight the upheaval. Graeber/Wengrow's book is taking me so long to read in part because of the quantity of such stories of our (non western) human history that I never knew of.

You know who I miss?

(en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_)

Genius in the truest sense of the word.

An / / ... not necessarily in that order.

Wrote the book

One of the primary architects of the original movement, and probably the guy that coined the slogan "We are the 99%".

He passed away a couple of years ago, probably thanks to Covid.

I'm going to read his last book, . I invite you to join me.

Bit annoying, I know, but I am so happy with the four books that just arrived I have to share (haven’t bought books for myself in absolutely ages and ages). As an i am embarrassed to be getting to so late (i did buy it as an audiobook during Lockdown but, unlike podcasts, it didn’t combine well with kitchen work). Anyway, really looking forward to properly all of these!

Which all means the fact that the UK Govt is ineffectual at almost everything *except* these things that target our freedoms (to move, to find refuge, to withdraw labour, to protest, etc.) takes on an even harsher and darker aspect.

"To understand the realities of power, whether in modern or ancient societies, is to acknowledge this gap between what elites claim they can do and what they are actually able to do."

From "The Dawn of Everything" by David Wengrow & David Graeber. It's a great, insightful read that's completely blown open the windows of my mind!

events occurred in the past to lead us to our current and just order of things today (as I ramble on about a bit in my blog post on ). It's deeply neoliberal, capitalist, and white supremacist.

“the evidence we have from Palaeolithic times onwards suggests that many—perhaps even most—people did not merely imagine or enact different social orders at different times of year, but actually lived in them for extended periods of time. The contrast with our present situation could not be more stark. Nowadays, most of us find it increasingly difficult even to picture what an alternative economic or social order would be like. Our distant ancestors seem, by contrast, to have moved regularly back and forth between them.

If something did go terribly wrong in human history—and given the current state of the world, it’s hard to deny something did—then perhaps it began to go wrong precisely when people started losing that freedom to imagine and enact other forms of social existence, to such a degree that some now feel this particular type of freedom hardly even existed, or was barely exercised, for the greater part of human history.” —David Graeber & David Wengrow, The Dawn of Everything

This book is a great cornucopia of examples from history and archeology and anthropology of such alternative social and economic structures that our ancestors imagined and moved between and fought for. I am for the first time in my adult life beginning to dare to hope for a world very different than what we have, and even more audacious, hoping that world is better.

Listening to David discuss his and Graeber’s book The Dawn of Everything, which sets out to critique many commonly held beliefs and colonialist ideas about the dawn of civilization, the agricultural revolution, historic and future models of society, and more. The book was just released in Swedish.
