The hematologist Oswald H. Robertson pioneered the idea of "blood banks" in by packing glass jars of citrated blood from universal donors in an ice-filled chest that he constructed from ammunition cases. He convinced countless others to donate blood, too. Learn more about this in my book .

While researching my latest book, , I came across this mask worn by tank crews in . Shaped to fit around the eyes & nose, the (chain)mail protected against "bullet splash" caused by explosions. Tanks also left their crews susceptible to burns. Lieutenant Stanley Cohen remembered trying to pry open an escape hatch that had been jammed when his tank had been hit by a shell. He eventually escaped, but was severely disfigured as a result.

It's wonderful to see my book listed as one of the @guardian's "Best Science Books of 2022!"

There are some other great titles on this list, including one of my favourites, AN IMMENSE WORLD, by Ed Yong. Check it out for gift ideas.

I was feeling pretty low thinking of all I've had to put aside to focus on my health since my diagnosis.

I said to @TealCartoons, "I've done a bad job promoting my book recently." And he replied, "You've done a great job staying alive."

Then, I saw listed on @NPR, alongside some other wonderful titles: npr.org/2022/11/30/1139749381/

This is the bookplate that I designed for my wife, @DrLindseyFitzharris, to be used in concert with her book, The Facemaker. It tells the story of Harold Gillies, the pioneering surgeon who reconstructed the faces of injured soldiers of World War One. It seemed apt to post it on .

This mask from protected tank crews against "bullet splash" caused by explosions as the tank came under fire. Tanks—which first appeared in September 1916—also left their crews susceptible to burns due to unprotected gas tanks which could ignite when hit.

Lieutenant Stanley Cohen remembered trying to pry open an escape hatch that had been jammed when his tank had been hit by a shell. He eventually escaped, but was severely disfigured.

Read more about him in my latest book .

It's wonderful to see my latest book, , on Waterstone's "Best of 2022" list under popular science. My book is about the pioneering surgeon, Harold Gillies, who rebuilt soldiers' faces during . It's part science, part history, part biography. It took five years to research and write, and I'm so glad to see readers enjoying it.

During , Marie Curie created a vehicle that contained a hospital bed, generator, X-ray machine & photographic darkroom equipment. These “petite Curies" (below) could be driven right up to the Front. Curie trained 150 women as radiology technicians.

You can learn more about this and other medical advances during WW1 in my latest book .

During , artists like Anna Coleman Ladd created masks for disfigured soldiers. The metal was painted with hard enamel to resemble the recipient's skin tone. Ladd then used real hair to create the eyelashes, eyebrows and moustaches. Had it not been for her efforts, many of these men would have lived in isolation.

You can learn more about this in my book, - about the pioneering surgeon, Harold Gillies, who rebuilt soldiers' faces during the war.
