La ciencia ficción en el mundo de David #Bowie se desarrolló desde temprana edad. Quizás la pronta lectura de Starman Jones de Robert Heinlein se encuentre entre sus primeras influencias. Inspirado en un trabajo de este autor, titularía el disco que llegaría a las bateas norteamericanas un día como el de hoy pero de 1970: #TheManWhoSoldTheWorld. En la edición inglesa del álbum que saldría meses más tarde, nótese la clara diferencia de la portada por las conservadoras características de la sociedad estadounidense, se ven claramente los primeros indicios de explotación andrógina del Duque Blanco recostado sobre un diván en una imagen inspirada en el pintor prerrafaelita del siglo XIX Dante Gabriel Rosetti.
