For #pridemonth we're celebrating #LGBTQ :flagProgress: #animation and this week, it's #film.

It took almost ten years after yesterday's film, ParaNorman, but The Mitchells vs. The Machines was the first animated film to feature an LGBTQ character as the lead. What sets the film apart though, is that Katie's weirdness is sensitively shown as stemming from something other than her queerness; a realistic subversion of how such characters are normally portrayed.

Oscars rarely note the animated films I'm all about so it's awesome to see #TheMitchellsVsTheMachines nominated for an Oscar but I am way more excited about the Annie noms of Pompo the Cinephile and Belle (and The Mitchells OBVIOUSLY)

The only thing I didn't really like? Satarising technology and Silicon Valley in particular is a bit passé even for animated films. The result is that I found that aspect of the film less true criticism and more a source of humour. Which is a bit disappointing because the trope is crying out for a fresh twist.

Overall though, it's a great film that I enjoyed a LOT more than I expected.

I watched The Mitchells Vs. The Machines last night and it was quite enjoyable. I have a bit of a soft spot for Sony Animation flicks and this is no exception.

The humour is, I would say, contemporary and trendy, but the score was great and TRON's influence continues unabated.

I liked all the characters and Katie makes for a good protagonist with a true realistic streak.

#TheMitchellsVsTheMachines is awesome. I really enjoyed it. It starts pretty quick, but mid to end is well paced. And this is a cartoon-fan movie. Few are more laser-meant for cartoon people for this. But you dont have to be to enjoy it.

And it is a joy. Great characters, great animation, more gags than you can shake a robot at.

It is really great, has a great heart, and a total recommend.
