"On Friday, the USA began accepting applications for financial relief for farmers who’ve faced discrimination... The program is offering farmers up to $500,000, although it’s worth noting that the USDA told CNN that applicants are unlikely to receive that full amount.

"Applications for relief funding will be open until October 31st. According to the USDA, the applications will be reviewed in November and December, and payment will be sent out 'soon thereafter.' The department says that the payments will not be sent or considered on a first-come-first basis. In order to qualify, the discrimination has to have taken place before January 1st, 2023."

"Last week, the Republican speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly, Robin Vos, implied that he’ll soon work to ban grants designated for minority undergraduate students. Vos took it upon himself to respond to a tweet asserting a scholarship program for Black, Indigenous, Hispanic and other minority students was equivalent to 'discrimination.'”

"In 2020, Jones won his race to represent the 17th district. But when redistricting happened, it placed him in direct competition with Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who chaired the House Democrats campaign arm. Rather than run against Maloney, Jones opted to run in the 10th district instead, where he lost to Congressman Dan Goldman. Maloney also lost the general election race to Lawler."

"In bystander footage of the incident, the man is heard telling the officers not to handle the woman so roughly because she has cancer after one deputy is seen yanking her by the neck. Activists told local reporters that the commotion was allegedly over a stolen cake from the bakery. The two left with a citation, but it’s not disclosed what they were cited for[.]"

"On Saturday, while headlining Lollapalooza Stockholm, Lil Nas X became the latest performer to have their show interrupted by a flying object. According to HipHopDX, the 'Industry Baby' singer was able to make a joke out of it when he realized it was a vagina-shaped sex toy, asking the crowd, 'Who threw they pussy on stage?' However, that wasn’t the case for singers Kelsea Ballerini and Bebe Rexha, both of whom were hit by objects thrown at the stage."

"You know what freedom is? It’s standing in line for so long in the cold that you can’t feel your fingers because your vote is worth something no matter how many Republicans tell you it’s not. It’s speaking out when you’re 93-years-old because you’re not selling your home no matter what big developers do to force you.

"Freedom means if they didn’t have a warrant or probable cause when they found it, they have to throw it out because we all play under the same rules. It means a poor Black kid in Swansea, SC deserves the same quality education as a rich white one in Scarsdale, NY. It means we count on each other, we serve each other, and we govern ourselves.

"It means I don’t have to listen to you and you don’t have to listen to me, but we both have a right to speak."

"The saying that when America catches a cold, Black folks catch pneumonia is ever so true with the climate crisis. The storms, heat, and extreme weather fluctuations aren’t one-time disasters and catastrophes that randomly to hit and destroy our most vulnerable communities. They follow this pattern because we’ve ignored investments in these communities that would otherwise strengthen their climate resilience and save lives."

"The Supreme Court has been pumping out a steady stream of life-altering decisions on everything from LGBTQ+ rights to affirmative action. But there’s one case that didn’t make it onto their docket that’s worth a deeper look. On Friday, the Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era felony voting provision, meaning the provision will be allowed to continue."

"[O]n Thursday, Thomas got his ultimate wish. In a decision split entirely on conservative and liberal lines, the Supreme Court declared the use of race in admissions policies (with narrow exceptions) unconstitutional. The ruling landed a mortal blow to efforts to integrate schools in the United States after years of attacks on integration policies in K-12 education.

“'This is the culmination of a dream that has been held by Justice Roberts and especially Clarence Thomas for decades,' says Howard Law School Professor and Executive Director of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center, Justin Hansford."
