Haven't read the Atlantic yet, but you are right. My third day poking around on Mastodon (via newsie.social server started for journalism pros, profs, etc.), having flashbacks to my 1980s exploring #Usenet, #fidonet #BBSs, #CompuServe, #thewell, #BIX, #Delphi and more.

Very curious about whether the Federated model will get average-person friendly enough in apps, installation and navigation for my non-geek FB neighbor groups, powerful as a local newspaper.

Anybody else having flashbacks to #Usenet or #fidonet in the 1980s? If so, what were your usual haunts?
In a double-dipping trip to grad schools (#Wesleyan, #UNC ) mid journalism career, my main newsgroups were #rec.music.folk #alt.hypertext and #rec.boats

I freelanced for computer mags while staff at boating mag #Soundings; wrote about computers-and-boats more than expected:
CS profs & software entrepreneurs with boats, boating forums on #thewell or #CompuServe, & the '90s dawn of #WWW

I think this article overlooks the pre-web phenomenon of online communities eg #TheWELL, #PLATO, #CompuServe, #CiX, #Fidonet and myriad #BBS where people gathered into social networks & almost entirely virtual, but lasting, friendships formed. Some of these systems (eg CiX, founded in 1983) exist to this day.

What /may/ be coming to an end is the model of user as product. Good.
