Re-reading #TheWindInTheWillows for the first time for ages, I’m struck by how much it is a wish-fulfilment fantasy of the Edwardian age - for a specific person. There are no women; our heroes are well-off (but scared of the underclass) and everyone knows their place.
It is very much “the happy place” for the author, with extra Mr Toad on the side. Yes, still very lovely, but I kept wondering how the economy worked and also why eating pork was fine when all the other animals could talk.
