In the U.S. Trump succeeded in telling the middle + lower class, “Hey we're going to continue with tax dumping, but I’ll protect you in another way...against Chinese, Mexicans, Muslims.” He was able to be elected on a fear ideology where you don’t redistribute btw the rich & poor but rather you protect white male #Americans against anybody who looks foreign. The French economist #ThomasPiketty paints a grim picture of how the vestiges of old tri-functional systems (feudal England, ancien régime) live on in centralised states esp. 🇬🇧 &🇺🇸 It makes for grim reading. #CapitalEtIdéologie.

It feels as if political #accountability in once role-model centralised states has been eroded by widespread deep #corruption more at home in the old tri-functional (eg. feudal, ancien régime) systems of governance. #UK and the #US leading the way. The EU looks more proactive to its manifest corruption problems. #ThomasPiketty makes much sense of this in his ‘Capital et ideologie’ and mentions that traces of « des États tri-fonctionnelles » remain evident in some developed centralised states.

The #French concept of ‘#intellectuel’ (& all its cognates, eg. « intellectualisme ») is so heavily (& very often in the Vth Rep, negatively*) nuanced that it is difficult to generalise about. And yet France produces coalface writers - intellectuals - of the calibre of #MichelWinock & #ThomasPiketty, whose major works are of the highest analytical standard (& I’m using the only independent benchmark I know: the anglophone tradition).
