PATIENCE! though I have not
The thing that I require;
I must, of force, God wot,
Forbear my most desire,
For no ways can I find
To sail against the wind.
Patience! do what they will
To work me woe or spite;
I shall content me still
To think both day and night;
To think, and hold my peace,
Since there is no redress.
Patience! withouten blame,
For I offended nought;
I know they know the same,
Though they have changed their thought.

ONCE, as methought, fortune me kiss’d,
And bade me ask what I thought best,
And I should have it as me list,
Therewith to set my heart in rest.
I asked but my lady’s heart,
To have for evermore mine own;
Then at an end were all my smart;
Then should I need no more to moan.

STAND, whoso list, upon the slipper wheel
Of high estate ; and let me here rejoice,
And use my life in quietness each dele*,
Unknown in court that hath the wanton toys :
In hidden place my time shall slowly pass,
And when my years be past withouten noise,
Let me die old after the common trace ;
For gripes of death doth he too hardly pass,
That knowen is to all, but to himself, alas,
He dieth unknown, dasèd with dreadful face.
