So Phil Pennington says on RNZ that server contracts for Three Waters are going to a company controlled by the surviving Koch Brother;
https://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Koch_Brothers
Just... why?!?
This is being driven by a government-mandated "cloud first policy", despite the fact that as well as reducing control over services and data, putting servers in the "cloud" almost always ends up being more expensive than any other way of hosting servers.
Just... why?!?

The water is off for emergency repairs again this morning. This happens far too regularly in our town. Our infrastructure sucks. #ThreeWaters
A sizable chunk of the opposition to the Three Waters reforms were driven by fears of public water infrastructure being commercialised, and maybe even sold off, like the phone and power networks. As #GordonCampbell points out, this is much more likely under National's plan:

You'd think with all the flooding in the North Island the priority would be to push 3 waters quicker to organize our storm water system on a national level to try and get infrastructure builds underway to minimize the impact of said event's, because let's face it all across NZ local councils are hopeless.
But no instead they want to stay the course of fuck ups.
Just waiting for Nats to add "were looking at letting private investment in 3 waters" because we all know that's plan with scrapping the current plan they just don't want to tell the whole truth before election day because they know the NZ public would rip them a new one.
These National Party Three Waters signs are not ageing well.

We support co-governance in initiatives like Three Waters as it recognises Tiriti rights of Māori having sovereignty over their resources and taonga – such as water. Excellent explainer on 3 Waters

@joshua_drummond all that and we can work collaboratively to fix infrastructure to cope and engage with local iwi who may have knowledge of water patterns in area too. Water falls and flows away IF drainage is adequate, channels are maintained and buildings aren't at lowest points in a flood plain or a valley. Work on #ThreeWaters aka #ThreePipes is a start but more community led thinking is needed
Whenever any of the muppets say that we need to get rid of #ThreeWaters and keep rates low, you can simply reply with this image.

There will also be questions about maintenance of local drains in low lying areas @thirzajane Rain falls from the sky, we can't stop that but where does it go next and how quickly can water infrastructure move it on? Is this something #ThreeWaters aka #ThreePipes could help with?
"Amid the focus on the dollars and cents, it's worth remembering that the promised cost savings of the reforms are secondary to the main event: improving the safety and quality of New Zealand's drinking water, wastewater and stormwater.
....
"Addressing the financial issue alone would not improve the fragmented delivery structure, address the lack of management capability, or bring more certainty to investment pipelines ..."

This article is a great view into the #ThreeWaters debate.
I remember fondly my 8 years working at a local council and close up knowledge of the dozen or so decision makers who, more likely than not pretty much every year, chose no investment in anything to keep their rates low. Election after election.
Local control of water has community positives AND negatives. Bring on Three Waters please.#NZPol

And continuing that theme, I could be wrong in that #Trumps defenders are controversial. They are bad faith actors.
#ThreeWaters is controversial as everyone agrees that something needs to be done but how we so it? That's the question
#Trump getting indicted is historic or unprecedented but not controversial.
#ThreeWaters is a #nzpol hot potato, but articles like this do little to clarify.
$659 million is actually:
- only $75 million capex
- $582 million in opex
- how does it compare to now?
- is it a typical Govt business case underestimate?
- unclear in scope. Does it include the telemetry and SCADA systems supporting the infrastructure?
- unclear in duration. Is the opex for 1/3/5/10 years (or until the next Govt rolls back all changes)?

@BigD the criminal offending happened many years ago and damaged the council's reputation resulting in central Government being unwilling to fund other projects. The problem wasn't only the executive's crimes but how easily he covered them up. If he hadn't awarded a $7M contract to a cake decorator friend for a sewerage project he may have go away with it too. He's on trial but is the council really up to scratch? I don't know if #ThreeWaters would fix the lack of oversight but I hope so #NZpol
