It's time to upgrade my data storage. Not quite sure how to proceed. Looking for speed (for RAW photo files and backups) and quiet. Other needs are a Plex server (mostly music) and general storage.

Contemplating:
- #unraid server
- Big ass #thunderbolt enclosure connected to my Mac
- #Synology #NAS?

Currently running #Plex from the Mac with about 10 TB hooked up directly and another 4TB on a Synology that's been on for 500 days.

Das CalDigit TS4 ist eines der cooleren Docks, das ich gesehen hab (und meine Frau hat es im Einsatz).

Für mich müsste es ca. 6 USB-Ports mehr haben auf der Rückseite. Aber es reizt mich immer wieder, eins zu bestellen.

I do not appreciate macOS forgetting that my #Thunderbolt hub is an “approved" device on update. I run my MBA in clamshell model so I’m left wondering if the update is rebooting again & that’s why my monitor isn’t getting signal or is it a problem with the update? No, it’s Apple wanting me to bless the hub, yet again… 😞

Edit: oh wait it's a thunderbolt dock but still has DisplayLink? Well anyway original reply for posterity.

@ndrei does Linux not have good #DisplayLink support or is the issue a lack of clear "you need to install this non-free driver" messaging?

Can usb-c docks without #DisplayLink support more than one monitor though? I thought it only embedded one #DisplayPort interface so you'd probably need a #thunderbolt hub with a GPU to not have to use DisplayLink and get two monitors out of the hub.

This is terribly geeky, but I upgraded one of my external storage solutions to an NVMe M.2 inside a Thunderbolt 4 enclosure and the speeds are absurd. I've been around long enough to distinctly remember the days of 3.5" floppies, Zip disks, and the advent of CD-ROM and what computer peripherals can achieve now is mind boggling. For fun, I compared my new precious to a dollar store USB memory stick and, well, those certainly are quite different numbers. 😆 #computertech #thunderbolt #macbook
