Oh shit, it's #ThripsThursday!
I've seen these candy-cane-like thrips on silver maple a couple times. At least, I'm pretty sure they're thrips. If anyone has a better idea, suggest it on #iNaturalist?

Second-instar nymph of Haplothrips subtilissimus inside a gall on dodder that was made by a weevil (it's complicated). I have no idea how it got in there. Maybe hatched from an egg inserted into developing gall by parent (thrips have serrated ovipositors). Species is reported to be predaceous on mites and various arthropod eggs but in this case perhaps was consuming the beetle or one of its ectoparasites (wasps). #thrips #Thysanoptera #entomology #insect #galls #nature

If anyone would like to see some great thrips pics, check out Manfred Ulitzka's site. Just incredible. #thrips #entomology #macro #photography #Thysanoptera
