Tank Man

Remembering the uprisings and ensuing massacre on Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989, and the incredible action of a lone man who stood directly in the path of an advancing column of tanks the day after the June 4th massacre. He is forever known as Tank Man and his identity and ultimate fate are unknown to this day.

On this anniversary of the #TiananmenSquare massacre, let's remember what was erased from the historical narrative:

The protest movement at Tiananmen Square was not based in anti-communism. There were a small amount of liberals who managed to infiltrate the decidedly communist movement at the very end, but they never had much internal influence. The Tiananmen Square protests were anti-authoritarian and against consolidation of the Party as the only allowed basis for communism in the Cultural Revolution. They were, in fact, more communist than the Communist Party itself.

When we buy into the narrative of the Tiananmen Square protesters as liberals, pushed by the Chinese and US states alike, we shit on the graves of the real Tiananmen Square protesters. And we harm the people of today's China by falsely attributing a desire for liberalism to them.

Today is the anniversary of the #TiananmenSquareMassacre in #Beijing. In the year 1989, when the wall in @berlin fell, China began its path towards an Orwellian nightmare with the massacre of innocent students at the place of "heavenly peace" - the meaning of #TiananmenSquare. Back to #China for this week's #TravelTuesday post, and on our 2008 honeymoon we visited Tiananmen Square in #Beijing. One of our fondest #travel memories comes from here. We were walking and taking photos, a couple of the perhaps two dozen westerners amongst thousands of Chinese tourists, when a girl asked to have her photo taken with me. Sure, why not? And then a queue formed for dozens more people to do the same. A bizarre, fun experience.

Good news from #HongKong: Chow Hang Tung - whose group organizes yearly #TiananmenSquare Vigils - has her conviction overturned: the police acted unlawfully!

It could have implications for other cases against pro-#democracy activists!
