I had the great honour recently of visiting the grave of Able Seaman Charles Bonner in Port Chalmers, New Zealand, who fell from the crows nest and was tragically killed on the RRS Discovery prior to its departure to the Antarctic from Dunedin in 1901 on Scott’s Discovery Expedition 1901-1904 #antarctic #scott #tomcrean #Shackleton #discovery #dunedin #newzealand #portchalmers #charlesbonner

I read #TomCrean An Unsung Hero by Michael Smith a few years ago. Currently enjoying it again listening to the eAudiobook via #Borrowbox.
The word hero is used too much these days, but Tom Crean was simply just that #hero. What a man he was.
Delighted to see that we now have the RV Tom Crean here in Ireland.

Tom Crean was from Kerry, Ireland & sailed on 3 major expeditions to the #antarctic over a century ago. He was among a few men who served with both Captain Robert #scott & Sir Ernest #Shackleton. He spent longer on the ice than either. Everest conqueror Sir Edmund Hillary said he was a 'great man of immense strength and endurance and afraid of very little'.
