Today in Labor History January 13, 1874: The original Tompkins Square Riot occurred on this date in response to the Long Depression. The depression, which lasted from 1873-1877, was the worst depressions in the history of the U.S. until the Great Depression of the 1930s. Over 3 million people were unemployed. 900 people starved to death in the winter of 1873, while 3,000 people left their infants on doorsteps because they couldn’t feed them. In New York City, alone, there were over 90,000 homeless workers, half of whom were women. >7,000 marched to Tompkins Square Park to demonstrate for public works jobs, when mounted police charged into the crowd, beating men, women and children indiscriminately with clubs, causing hundreds of casualties. Police Commissioner Abram Duryee said, "It was the most glorious sight I ever saw."
