What’s the current state of the art for self-hosted “tools for thought” (knowledge base / notes.) Particularly, looking for the server component and a backup story, that then can work with some frontend mobile app like Logseq/Roam/Obsidian?
A little speculation about #ToolsForThought design - we‘re finalizing the era where the design of storing all the information of our thoughts and the context around them has been solved. storing ( / not loosing) our thoughts is becoming a solved problem.
One of the next steps could be synthetic memory for our workflows *around* thoughts. Scriptable workflows and workflow state memory stacks. This also lets us create more powerful mnemonic prompts around what kind of work and context we are in.
How can we return to this way of working and collaborating on the web?
That was the question Gordon Brander and Chris Joel had two years ago. They wanted to find a way to build a worldwide knowledge graph that would empower users to own their thoughts, all while connecting with others to work more efficiently.

You should own your thoughts. Subconscious is a tool for thought build on the open source Noosphere protocol that empowers users to do just that by avoiding centralization and enjoying the networked intelligence effects of a worldwide knowledge graph. Just posted an update on my Block Level Filter action for @drafts. This one exposes proximally related lines ("blocks") in search results, obviously inspired by other popular PKM/TFT apps. Useful for those of us who use Drafts as a destination for notes. https://directory.getdrafts.com/a/2Lo

Hey PKMers. Let’s learn from each other.
- When do you link notes? Late night sessions? During "eureka" moments?
- Why link them? What's your goal?
- New thought = new note + link?
- Any note-linking rituals, phases or steps you go through?
- Tools/plugins to find novel connections?
Curious about your methods. Share if you can!

I made some progress on #NENO lately, now at version v6.8.0
New features include
- Modeless Subtext editing (Subtext is a markup format for note-taking https://github.com/subconsciousnetwork/subtext)
- Notes are saved as plain-text files on the user's device. No user data is uploaded to a server.
- Transclusions: Link to other notes or files with slashlinks and see a transclusion of the note or a preview of the file (depending on format).
- many more

This is not a drill! The Noosphere beta has officially launched! 🤓
Noosphere is a local-first tool for thought protocol that syncs with IPFS. Created by Subconsious, it's designed to level up our collective intelligence.
We're sharing a blog post next week all about Noosphere and (how the team uses UCANs to handle authorization!), but until then, we encourage you to check out this new write-up for an inside look! https://buff.ly/45x8fJe #toolsforthought #ipfs
I've just finished my first cut at a tutorial for using #Forester, my tool for developing Stacks-like online Zettelkästen, reference books, and lecture notes for scientists, mathematicians, and students.

Glad to release forester 2.3! Please see the changelog for full details: https://www.jonmsterling.com/jms-006Z.xml
Thanks to @armael, @rileyshahar, and Masanori Ogino for their contributions of code and ideas that made it into this release.
Check out this great interview with 2023 speaker @maggie on her work in digital gardening and personal knowledge sharing! #toolsforthought #digitalgardening https://theinformed.life/2023/07/16/episode-118-maggie-appleton/

@jslr It‘s not impossible to separate them, but I think it‘s worth the thought excercise to converge on a standard set of what definitely needs storing in terms of information objects (i.e. Obsidian Canvas has no free-line vector support) because we care a lot about open-data format compatibility and transportability to other applications under #ToolsForThought for longevity purposes. So it‘s worth isolating these things best as able and derive consensus.
We’re tryin’ something
Been watching the project for a while and I think @obsidian is finally ready for me to put it to the test and try ditching Notion for a bit. I’ve never particularly loved having all my stuff locked in an app, but Notion was the tool that finally “just worked” the way my brain did. Let’s see how far I can push Obsidian+Zotero+my refreshening scripting skills

I used #Tana to manage my day yesterday, rather than the usual #Obsidian
I like it. There are pros and cons, like all #ToolsForThought
Going to try another “live” day with it today before composing my thoughts.

@markmcelroy #ZimDesktop has been delivering for me for almost 5 years, now :)
One of the things that it really does well -- that so many of the other #toolsForThought note-makers don't do as well -- is the Backlinks which are in a side-pane, so *always visible* instead of some footer div that has to be unfolded. The friction of even a single click is too far away imho.
Then, too, #Markdown is far from my favourite thing, so there's that... 😂

I've just discovered the research notebook app/digital commonplace book Orson, which looks very interesting.
What particularly caught my attention is how its structure maps precisely onto the pattern @gordon has identified as "capture, organise, synthesise"
Orson has cards to capture information, contexts (e.g. maps, timelines, etc) to organise, and pages to write narratives, embedding cards or contexts as necessary.

I know it’s a mistake to invest time in new unproven note-taking/productivity apps like #Tana, but these networked knowledge tools are like crack to my brain. Data types at the block-level are a potent addition. Halp.

For those wanting ample margins for active “reading with a pen in hand” are there any publishers that do a great job of wider margins on “classics”/”great books”?
I’m tempted to self-publish custom versions of wide margin or interleaved books.
