Toronto Instutions: 76 Pembroke St is still standing in the east end. Pembroke House YWCA was reportedly the first shelter for battered women in Toronto. Of YWCA boarding houses, this one, I have been told took no attitude from the angry husbands when protecting the women inside. This was a safe place women were confident they would not be turned away.

The find: I found it going through old photos at an antique market.

Thornton Blackburn: Escaped slavery in Kentucky in the 1830s, coming to Toronto founding the city's first taxicab company. His case helped establish the Underground Railroad when the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada refused extradition to the United States, stating that a person could not steal himself.
