Drivers routinely bomb down our street and blast through the stop sign in front of our house. Dinners are frequently punctuated with my fruitless shouts of "SLOW DOWN!" Our efforts at getting traffic calming measures installed haven't succeeded, so my partner is trying a different approach: with a 50-yr old sewing machine and a crash course from my mom, he's making curtains.

In the past it was sometimes a bit unpleasant because of through traffic, but a few years ago the road was closed to through motor traffic so it's much more pleasant now. Drivers have fewer possible routes to take in and out of the city than are available to cyclists.

And this is the last photo for today. This country lane is closed to through motor traffic except for residents and farm vehicles. There's a camera noting number plates of others so that they can be sent a fine. It doesn't apply to bicycles of course so through we go. This helps to keep country lanes quiet for cycling.
It's one of the ways in which the countryside is traffic calmed.

#NewHaven took a nasty intersection with weird angles and wide streets, and is currently turning it into an enormous peanut-shaped roundabout with protected cycletracks, pedestrian medians, and a park/garden area inside the peanut, that will limit traffic speeds to about 15MPH or less.
