@ohrite since speed limits are so widely ignored, & SFPD refuses to enforce traffic safety (heck, the number of SFPD vehicles I see ignoring the vehicle code re speeds, stops, right on red)
So let's use some of the money going to SFPD for faster, better traffic engineering fixes.
I can't help but believe traffic engineers know how to design speed bumps that you can drive over at 20 mph, and get a real shock at 30.
Perfect streets approaching/leaving on/off ramps
And then no turn on red arrows for the pedestrian walk phases, with camera enforcement.
And not just at 4th & King.

Per press release, SFMTA will remove the double right turn lane at 4th & King that contributed to the death of a 4-year-old child.
There is nothing in here about removing other double right turn lanes all over SoMa and the city. Why not? They’re acknowledging it’s an unsafe design. Fix the unsafe design citywide. Or must we sacrifice another child at each individual corner?

@RichmondFamilySF and it's not just fixing that intersection. We have unsafe streets throughout the city, and hazardous driving behaviors are much too high everywhere.
I don't understand why #SFPD has eliminated #sfpdtraffic in favor of officers hanging out at high end stores. Do we, as pedestrians, residents and taxpayers need to hire off-duty police like so many businesses do so that we can stop driver violence?

I think we'd find it's mostly because companies wanted to sell pickup trucks. Advertising, product placement, pricing, promotions all shape consumer preferences.
Also, car companies can only offer cheap trucks by skirting regulations. This is why the oversized truck Mike drives in LA is regulated less than every other car driving to pickup coffee in the morning.

This piece about decreasing murder rates (after a covid surge) across major cities in the US motivated me to look at this in context of my normal urbanist (envi justice) perspective.
NYC is doing better than the National avg.
Cuttings and Stabbings in NYC have roughly the same frequency as Traffic Violence Deaths. Shootings about 2-3x rate.
Still think not enough is written about the order of magnitude greater #TrafficViolence though.
